We started off tasting maple syrup and maple candy, followed by some activities for the children. They played some games about the sequence in which maple syrup is made. They learned about the different kinds of maple trees. After that, it was back outside to see sap being boiled down into different maple products.
I had no idea the sap was clear when it came out of the trees. We were able to taste the sap while we watched spials being hand carved. It tasted like slightly sweetened water. The kids thought that was neat.
There were more activities for the children to do. Corb, Len and Hads had maple leaves painted on their cheeks, Ozzy was a too much of a chicken. They had one really cute craft. They made pancakes. The pancakes were made out of that foamie paper. They hot glued the pancakes onto small paper plates. Then, had the children paint with brown paint to represent syrup. After they had their syrup on they hot glued a pat of butter(yellow foam) and a plastic fork. We are going to put ours in our play kitchen.
The final activity the children got to try was tapping a tree. I think this was really cool. They drilled the hole, put in the spial and hung the bucket.
