Corbin Current School Plans for 09-10

Plans for the next school year as they currently stand:

Corbin starting July 1, 2009 "1st grade":
-We plan on beefing Corbin's day a bit including more subjects. We will be joining a homeschooling group near by that hold regular classes and field trips. We are visiting another group next week that has co-op classes ever other week in the fall and spring. We are going to see what it is like and possibly sign on for classes this coming fall. We plan on making a lot of historical field trips around PA as well as visiting other education venues. Living books will be supplemented as much as possible for reinforcement.

English to include grammer, phonics, handwriting, and reading.
-First Language Lessons: Core for grammer
-Explode the Code: Core for phonics
-Handwriting Without Tears: handwriting/copywork
-Continue reading books together, at the conclusion of these I will hear an oral narration from Corbin. Occasionally we will do a different form of narration such as acting out or drawing.
-Regular written letters to Pen Pal

Mathematics
-Continue with Singapore Math: Core for Math. I expect him to either be on 1B or 2A
-Incorporate more use of manipulatives
-Play games involving math
-Experience math in everyday life

History
-Story of the World Text and Activity Book: Core for History
-Usborne History of the World: Supplement
-Living books as relating to the core book: Supplement
-Begin a history time line and Book of Centuries
-Explore American History through calendar holidays(Thanksgiving, July 4th etc)
-Explore Pennsylvania History through various local field trips

Science
-Earlybird Science from Singapore
-Let's Read and Find Out
-Nature observation to include: Garden Journal, Bird Log, and Trip Journal
-Hands-on experiments and observations to include: frog and butterfly metamorphosis, worm farm, ant farm, examine owl pellet, how plants grow

Geography
-Map Skills
-Beginning Geography Continents and Oceans
-Beginning Geography Landforms and Water

Health
-Experience through regular Doctor and Dentist appointments
-Learn about different parts of the body(teeth, organs, skeleton..and so on)
-Importance of...sleeping, eating well, hygiene

Art
-To be explored as projects with other subjects
-Experiment with different medias

Music
-Listen to different genres of music

Physical Education
-Swimming lessons
-Everyday play
