Experiments, apples and pumkins...oh my

That rain from Becktoberfest. Dirty rain. But a blessing in disguise. The day after all the rain was very sunny. We noticed that the winter rye and grass that we had planted started sprouting. Now there is a soft green haze over the garden. How neat that these new little shoots are coming up just as we got our first "flurry" of snow.
How do plants drink? If you ever find yourself asking just do this age old experiment. We learned about the tubes that plants have in their roots that enable them to drink in water from the soil. As well as some other fascinating things. The kids thought it was pretty cool.

Remember those caramel apples we were going to make? Well, we did make them and they were delish.

Today's fun involved little gourds and pumpkins. I had Corb pick a few out then tell me words that describe them. He also sorted our little assortment of 40 into groups based on similar characteristics.

These are the 3 he chose and some of the words he used to describe them...big, bumpy, very hard, big yellow banana, smells like an apple and green and white.
Then he made a neat tribute to gourds and pumpkins.
A good friend of the season returned to us today. Pumpkin Pie Playdoh. The children have been playing with it for over an hour. It is as fun to make as it is to play with.
